Commercial Air Conditioning Installation – Cellular Agriculture Science Park
Coolstream delivered a £550 000 commercial air conditioning installation and ventilation package for new food-grade laboratories and offices at a UK science park.
The 26-week project included two indoor air-handling units and a Mitsubishi Electric heat-recovery VRF network feeding thirty-six ducted fan coil units to deliver stable research space comfort.
Project Overview
The design avoided external plant because planning rules restricted positions. Instead, two ceiling-mounted air-handling units supply filtered fresh air, recovering heat through integrated coils.
A Mitsubishi Electric VRF backbone provides simultaneous heating and cooling, serving laboratory benches, support rooms and open-plan offices through discreet ducted fan coils installed on schedule.
Client and Facility Overview
The cellular agriculture company develops alternative protein and food technologies. Its new site features temperature-sensitive pilot labs adjacent to collaborative offices within a single envelope.
Planning authorities demanded hidden plant to preserve the science park’s visual profile, so all major equipment sits indoors, wrapped in acoustic insulation to retain low noise levels for focused laboratory work and meetings every day.
Project Brief and Objectives
Coolstream agreed to deliver a commercial air conditioning installation that guarantees stable laboratory climate control across varied research processes and provides comfortable office conditions. Targets included tight temperature tolerance, clean supply air, energy efficiency and simple user control.
The design had to comply with food safety guidance, fit existing structural grids and reach practical completion within 26 weeks to match critical funding milestones for the tenant’s move-in schedule date.
Laboratory Air Conditioning and Climate Control Design
Engineers modelled heat gains from incubators and cold rooms, then zoned each lab to separate high-load spaces from general areas.
Indoor air-handling units deliver filtered, tempered air, while VRF fan coils fine-tune local temperatures without recirculating contaminants between research processes.
Mitsubishi Electric VRF and Ducted Fan Coil Units
A three-pipe Mitsubishi Electric VRF backbone supports simultaneous heating and cooling, recovering waste heat from offices to help condition laboratory air.
Thirty-six ducted fan coil units sit above ceilings, linking to slim plenums that distribute air evenly across benches, write-up areas and meeting rooms without visible grilles cluttering the interior.
Indoor Air Handling Units
Planning limits ruled out rooftop plant, so two air-handling units were assembled inside a ground-floor plantroom.
Each unit integrates high-grade filtration, heat recovery coils and EC fans, feeding conditioned air to labs while drawing return air through close-coupled extract ducts.
Programme, Value and Team
